How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug, designed for connecting solid dielectric type cables to other ELASTIMOLD products on 15kV and 25kV class systems. It covers cable preparation, crimping, assembly, and connection to a mating receptacle. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation, and work should only be performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rag, Solvent applicator
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied with kit), Crimp Chart (supplied with kit), Solid dielectric type cable, Silicone grease, ELASTIMOLD bail, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), Sealing material, Approved solvent, ECS or MA grounding device (optional)
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
Cut and remove the cable jacket. For Jacketed Concentric Neutral, remove 8 inches, ensuring sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield, remove 7-1/2 inches of jacket and 6-1/2 inches of copper tape shield from the cable end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific jacket cut-back instructions.
- Remove Insulation and Prepare Conductor
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 compt./solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor.
- Crimp Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the supplied crimp chart. Start crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Clean and Pencil Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut; do not cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it per its instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Slide Collar
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto the cable. Keep cable insulation and the plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product or its mating part.
- Insert Cable into Plug Housing
Push the cable into the housing. Ensure the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect Plug to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), ensuring the rod is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Connect System Ground
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
