How to Install the Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, including cable preparation, conductor crimping, and connection to mating products. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Cable cutting tools, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Approved solvent, Multimeter

Supplies needed:

Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, Conductor Contact (male), Lubricant (supplied), Nylon Venting Rod (supplied), Solid dielectric type cable, Silicone grease, #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (for grounding), Sealing material (for grounding connections), Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP, optional), Elastimold bail, Inhibitor (typically pre-applied in crimp barrel)

  1. Safety First: De-energize and Inspect

Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating products. This installation must only be performed by competent personnel trained in high-voltage safety practices. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.

  2. Prepare the Cable Jacket

For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the end, ensuring sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the jacket 7 1/2 inches from the end, then remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the end. Follow specific instructions if using an ECS or MA grounding device for outer jacket cut back.

  3. Prepare Conductor Insulation and Shield

Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1 3/4 inches to 1 7/8 inches. Cut squarely, avoiding penciling. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.

  4. Crimp the Socket Terminal

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring it remains fully seated. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  5. Prepare and Clean Cable Insulation

Remove the semi-conductive shield 7 9/16 inches to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, squared cut, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with a rag wet with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket to remove all semi-conducting residue. Install an ECS or MA grounding device now if applicable.

  6. Lubricate and Insert Cable into Receptacle

Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable and the inside of the housing. Do not use substitute lubricants, as others may be harmful. Push the cable into the housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. If not connecting immediately, replace with an Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP) as the shipping cover is not an insulating device.

  7. Connect to Mating Plug

Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Insert the supplied nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approx. 1 3/4 inches), ensuring it is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible, then pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an Elastimold bail. A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.

  8. Ground the Cable

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
