How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing cables, crimping the conductor contact, and installing the K151SP Straight Plug for 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Measuring tape or ruler, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Clean rag, Approved solvent
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug kit (includes Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Pin Installation, Lubricant, Crimp Chart), Solid dielectric type cable, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone grease, ELASTIMOLD bail (for securing connection), Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent, customer supplied, if not using ELASTIMOLD grounding device), Sealing material (for grounding wires, customer supplied), ECS or MA grounding device (optional)
- Prepare the Cable Jacket
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, allowing sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.
- Remove Cable Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.
- Crimp the Conductor Contact
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Insulation and Clean Cable
Temporarily remove the plastic pin from the socket. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut. Do not cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag wet with an approved solvent, always wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Housing
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE; other lubricants may be harmful to this product or its mating product.
- Install Plug onto Cable
Push the prepared cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), ensuring the nylon rod is not cut during mating. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an ELASTIMOLD bail; reference the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4). CAUTION: A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.
- Connect Grounding Wire (Optional)
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
