How to Use the ERG4802 Crimping Tool

This guide provides instructions for the safe and effective use of the ERG4802 hand-operated crimping tool. It covers the process of installing Thomas & Betts insulation piercing connectors on magnet wire, including preparation, crimping, inspection, and essential maintenance.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

ERG4802 Crimping Tool, File, Standard Micrometer or Ball Micrometer

Supplies needed:

Thomas & Betts Insulation Piercing Connectors (e.g., 22L002 series), Magnet Wire (e.g., (6) #20 Cu), Safety Glasses, Clean brush or soft, lint-free cloth, SAE No. 20 motor oil

  1. Familiarize with Tool and Safety Precautions

Read and understand all instructions and safety information in this manual before operating the ERG4802 crimping tool. Always wear safety glasses. Never attempt to make a connection to a "hot" line; always determine if any electrical hazard exists before connecting to a line or wire. Keep all body parts away from the die nest during gaging or crimping procedures.

  2. Prepare Connector and Wires for Crimping

Refer to the instruction sheet enclosed with your specific Thomas & Betts insulation piercing connectors. Select the proper connector to be installed on the wire(s) and ensure you are using the correct installing tool (ERG4802 for 22L002 series connectors with (6) #20 Cu wire). Open the tool handles fully. For convenience, partially close the handles until the indentor die touches the connector before placing wires.

  3. Position Connector and Insert Wires

Position the connector barrel in the center of the die nest, ensuring the bottom of the barrel rests on the die indentor and the open end of the barrel faces into the die nest. Carefully insert the wire(s) into the connector. Always refer to the connector instruction sheet for proper wire arrangement.

  4. Perform the Crimping Operation

Compress the connector by firmly squeezing the tool handles until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism cycle has been completed. This mechanism prevents the dies from opening until a preset crimping pressure is reached, ensuring a proper crimp. Release the handles to open the tool.

  5. Remove and Inspect the Crimped Connection

Remove the crimped connector from the tool. With a file, carefully remove any flash from the connector edges. Periodically, measure the connector gaging with a standard micrometer (or ball micrometer for 22L006 series) to ensure the connection meets acceptable standards, as continuous tool use can cause wear and increase gaging.

  6. Maintain the ERG4802 Crimping Tool

Regularly check the tool's operation for proper adjustment. Remove dust, moisture, and other contaminants with a clean brush or soft, lint-free cloth. Apply a thin coat of SAE No. 20 motor oil to all pins, pivot points, and bearing surfaces, avoiding excessive oiling. Keep the handles closed when not in use to prevent objects from becoming lodged in the dies, and store the tool in a cool, dry area.
