This guide provides instructions for safely operating the ERG4801 hand-operated crimping tool to install Thomas & Betts insulation piercing connectors on magnet wire, ensuring proper crimping and maintenance.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
ERG4801 Crimping Tool, File, Standard or ball micrometer, Clean brush or soft, lint-free cloth, SAE No. 20 motor oil, Safety glasses
Supplies needed:
Thomas & Betts insulation piercing connectors, Magnet wire, Connector instruction sheet
- Review Safety Guidelines and Prepare Work Area
Familiarize yourself with the ERG4801 tool and its operation. Always wear safety glasses. Ensure your work area is clean, well-lit, and free of clutter. NEVER attempt to make a connection to a 'hot' or energized line; always verify power is OFF before starting. Keep all body parts away from the die nest during crimping.
- Select Proper Components and Prepare the Tool
Refer to the instruction sheet provided with your specific Thomas & Betts insulation piercing connectors. Select the correct connector for your wire combination and ensure you are using the ERG4801 tool as specified in Table 1. Fully open the handles of the ERG4801 crimping tool.
- Position Connector and Insert Wires
Carefully position the connector barrel in the center of the tool's die nest, ensuring the bottom of the barrel rests on the die indentor and the open end faces into the die nest. Insert the wire(s) into the connector, following the proper wire arrangement specified in the connector instruction sheet.
- Crimp the Connector
Squeeze the tool handles firmly and continuously until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism completes its cycle. This mechanism prevents the dies from opening until the preset crimping pressure is reached. Once the cycle is complete, release the handles to open the tool.
- Remove and Inspect the Crimped Connector
Remove the newly crimped connector from the tool. If present, use a file to carefully remove any flash from the connector edges. Periodically, measure the connector gaging with a standard or ball micrometer to ensure acceptable connections are being made, referring to Table 1 for maximum gaging values.
- Maintain the Crimping Tool
Regularly clean the tool by removing dust, moisture, and other contaminants with a clean brush or soft, lint-free cloth. Apply a thin coat of SAE No. 20 motor oil to all pins, pivot points, and bearing surfaces, avoiding excessive oiling. Keep the handles closed when not in use to prevent objects from lodging in the dies and store the tool in a cool, dry area.
