How to Install the CD-720-5 Compression Tool

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing and configuring the CD-720-5 compression tool for effective use in electrical applications.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Multimeter

Supplies needed:

Mounting screws, Terminal connectors

  1. Install the die

Open the handles of the CD-720-5 tool fully. Insert the selected die into the recess in the tool head with the compression pocket facing the jaw. Align the hole in the die with the die retention screw and firmly tighten the screw.

  2. Adjust the tool

Lay the tool on a flat surface and close the handles until the jaw just contacts the die. Measure the distance between the tips of the grips; it should be between 10 inches (254 mm) and 13 inches (330 mm). Adjust the screw accordingly if the distance is out of range.

  3. Perform a visual inspection

Inspect the tool for any missing or loose pins and check the dies for any worn, chipped, or cracked surfaces. Ensure all components are in good condition before proceeding.

  4. Connect the wire

Insert the bared conductor into the terminal connector. Ensure that the connector is positioned in the compression pocket so that the die is between the compression bands on the connector.

  5. Compress the connector

Completely close the handles of the tool to compress the connector. If multiple compressions are required, repeat the operation as necessary.

  6. Lubricate the tool

Monthly, wipe the tool and dies clean with a lint-free cloth and lubricate the pivot pins with SAE 20 or equivalent machine oil to ensure smooth operation.
