How to Crimp Insulation Piercing Connectors with the ERG4804 Tool

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely and effectively using the ERG4804 hand-operated crimping tool to install Thomas & Betts insulation piercing connectors on magnet wire. It covers the crimping process and post-crimp inspection.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

ERG4804 crimping tool, Safety glasses, File, Standard or ball micrometer

Supplies needed:

Thomas & Betts insulation piercing connectors (e.g., 22L004 series), Magnet wire

  1. Prepare for Crimping

Wear safety glasses. Fully open the ERG4804 tool handles. For convenience, partially close the handles until the indentor die touches the connector before placing wires.

  2. Load the Connector

Select the appropriate Thomas & Betts insulation piercing connector (e.g., 22L004 series for ERG4804) for your wire combination. Position the connector barrel in the center of the die nest, ensuring the bottom of the barrel rests on the die indentor and the open end faces into the die nest.

  3. Insert Wires

WARNING: NEVER ATTEMPT TO MAKE A CONNECTION TO A “HOT” LINE. Always verify power is OFF before proceeding. Insert the wire(s) into the connector. Consult the connector's instruction sheet for the correct wire arrangement.

  4. Perform the Crimp

WARNING: HANDLES ARE NON-INSULATING. DO NOT CRIMP ON HOT ENERGIZED WIRES. Keep all body parts away from the die nest during crimping. Squeeze the tool handles to compress the connector until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism completes its cycle, preventing premature opening. Release the handles to open the tool.

  5. Remove and Check Crimp

Remove the crimped connector from the tool. Periodically check the crimped connector gaging to ensure acceptable connections are being made, as continuous tool use can decrease crimping pressure.

  6. Measure Crimp Gaging (Optional)

If performing a gaging check, first use a file to remove any flash from the connector edges. Then, measure the connector gaging using a standard micrometer or a ball micrometer with a 0.250 spindle diameter. Refer to Table 1 in the tool's documentation for the maximum acceptable gaging value for your specific connector and wire combination.
