How to Use the ERG4811 Crimping Tool

This guide provides instructions for safely operating the ERG4811 hand-operated crimping tool to install Thomas & Betts insulation piercing connectors on magnet wire, ensuring proper crimping and connection quality.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

ERG4811 Crimping Tool, Safety Glasses, File, Standard Micrometer, Ball Micrometer, Clean Brush or Soft Lint-Free Cloth

Supplies needed:

Thomas & Betts Insulation Piercing Connectors, Magnet Wire, SAE No. 20 Motor Oil

  1. Read Safety Information and Familiarize with Tool

Before operation, read and understand all safety information and instructions in the manual. Wear safety glasses. Never attempt to make connections to energized lines. WARNING: Handles are non-insulating. Do not crimp on hot energized wires.

  2. Select Connector and Tool

Refer to the instruction sheet enclosed with the connectors. Select the proper Thomas & Betts insulation piercing connector for your application and ensure you are using the correct installing tool (ERG4811 for 214420 connectors).

  3. Prepare the Crimping Tool

Open the tool handles fully. For convenience, before placing wire(s) in the connector, partially close the handles of the tool until the indentor die touches the connector.

  4. Position Connector and Insert Wires

Position the connector barrel in the center of the die nest with the bottom of the barrel resting on the die indentor and the open end facing into the die nest. Insert the magnet wire(s) into the connector, referring to the connector instruction sheet for proper wire arrangement.

  5. Perform the Crimp

Compress the connector by squeezing the tool handles firmly until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism cycle has been completed. Release the handles to open the tool and remove the crimped connector. WARNING: Keep all body parts away from the die nest during crimping procedure.

  6. Check Connector Gaging

After crimping, remove any flash from the connector edges using a file. Measure the connector gaging with a standard micrometer or ball micrometer to ensure it meets the specified maximum gaging for acceptable connections (e.g., 0.103 for ERG4811 with 214420 connector). If gaging exceeds the specific value, discontinue use of the tool and contact service for calibration.

  7. Maintain the Tool

Periodically clean the tool by removing dust, moisture, and contaminants with a clean brush or soft, lint-free cloth. Apply a thin coat of SAE No. 20 motor oil to all pins, pivot points, and bearing surfaces, avoiding excessive oiling. Keep handles closed when not in use to prevent objects from becoming lodged in the crimping dies. Store the tool in a cool, dry area.
