This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely and effectively using the ERG4806 hand-operated crimping tool to install Thomas & Betts insulation piercing connectors on magnet wire. It also covers important safety precautions and operational checks.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
ERG4806 Crimping Tool, Micrometer, Ball micrometer (optional), File, Clean brush or soft, lint-free cloth
Supplies needed:
Thomas & Betts 22L006 Series Connectors, Magnet wire (e.g., (3) #16 Cu), Safety glasses, SAE No. 20 motor oil
- Review Safety Guidelines and Tool Operation
Before operating, read and understand all safety information in this manual. Familiarize yourself with the ERG4806 tool's operation, including the SHURE STAKE® mechanism release. Always wear safety glasses. WARNING: Handles are non-insulating. DO NOT CRIMP ON HOT ENERGIZED WIRES. Never attempt to make a connection to a 'hot' line; always verify power is OFF.
- Select Components and Prepare Tool
Refer to the instruction sheet provided with your connectors. Select the appropriate Thomas & Betts 22L006 series connector and ensure you are using (3) #16 Cu magnet wires, as specified for the ERG4806 tool. Fully open the tool handles.
- Position Connector and Insert Wires
Carefully position the connector barrel in the center of the die nest, ensuring the bottom of the barrel rests on the die indentor and the open end faces into the die nest. Insert the magnet wire(s) into the connector, following the proper wire arrangement specified in your connector's instruction sheet. WARNING: Keep all body parts away from the die nest during this procedure.
- Crimp the Connector
Compress the connector by firmly squeezing the tool handles until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism cycle has fully completed. This mechanism prevents opening until the preset crimping pressure is reached.
- Remove Crimped Connector
Release the tool handles to open the dies, then carefully remove the newly crimped connector from the tool.
- Perform Operational Check and Gaging (Periodic)
Periodically check the tool's operation and crimped connector gaging to ensure acceptable connections. Crimp a specific connector/wire combination. Remove any flash from the connector edges with a file. Measure the connector gaging using a standard micrometer or a ball micrometer (0.250 spindle diameter). For ERG4806, the maximum gaging for (3) #16 Cu wire is 0.097. Discontinue use if gaging exceeds this value. IMPORTANT: Crimped connector gaging should be checked regularly.
- Maintain the Tool (Periodic)
Keep the tool in good condition. Remove dust, moisture, and contaminants with a clean brush or soft, lint-free cloth. Apply a thin coat of SAE No. 20 motor oil to all pins, pivot points, and bearing surfaces, avoiding excessive oil. Keep handles closed when not in use and store the tool in a cool, dry area.
