How to Install 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding procedures for terminating various UD cables.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test point (for 162LR)
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Vinyl tape, Cold shrink tube (if using 200ECS sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 or G3 kit), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- Prepare for Installation and Verify Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; if resistance is met prior to full assembly, check for damage and replace the component. Have all required tools ready and maintain a clean work area throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cable for Connector Assembly
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions to prepare the neutral wires or shield. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield to the specified lengths. Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor and aligning the threaded hole with the bushing bore. Bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum and thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble Elbow and Establish Grounding
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. Twist all neutral wires and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing (at this point the contacts are approximately 4 inches apart). DO NOT HOLD IN THIS POSITION BUT IMMEDIATELY PUSH THE ELBOW HOME WITH A FAST, FIRM, STRAIGHT MOTION to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
