Instructions for installing and connecting the 60985 two-way reducing splicer using aluminum or copper cables.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush or emery cloth, Crimping tool (specified in Table 1), Insulating tools (specified in Table 1)
Supplies needed:
ALUMA-SHIELD® Aluminum Joint Compound (if not pre-installed), Shrink tubing or adhesive pad (for insulation)
- Prepare the Cable
Strip the insulation from the cable to the length specified in Table 1. Be careful not to nick the cable strands. Smear a thin layer of ALUMA-SHIELD® Aluminum Joint Compound on the cable. Use a wire brush or emery cloth to clean the cable through the compound to remove surface oxide.
- Insert Cable into Splicer
WARNING: Do not remove compound from the splice barrel. Remove the protective caps from the ends of the splice barrel. Insert the prepared cable into the connector until it stops. The insertion length should approximate the stripped length of the cable.
- Crimp the Connection
CAUTION: Using improper installing dies may result in a malfunctioning connection. Select the correct installing die and the required number of compressions as specified in Table 1. Insert the connector into the die and compress. Start crimping near the center of the connector and work towards the end. Repeat compressions as required.
- Finish and Insulate
After crimping, remove any sharp edges, flashes, or burrs from the connection. Insulate the connection using the methods specified in Table 1, such as shrink tubing or an adhesive pad.
