How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide details the installation of 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, designed to convert livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cable. It covers cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, and neutral connection.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector
- Ensure Safety and Perform Initial Checks
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Failure to follow this instruction will result in serious or fatal injury. Before starting, check all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Read the entire installation instructions and have all required tools at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Remove Existing Livefront Termination
Ensure the apparatus is de-energized. Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the end of the cable so it measures 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches from the cut end, proceed. If greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, cutting squarely. DO NOT NICK THE CONDUCTOR.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean and avoid introducing excess grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Prepare for Connection to Bushing
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. IMPORTANT: ONLY LUBRICATE IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. The elbow is now ready for connection to the bushing, which should be performed using a full insulated hotstick according to operating instructions.
