How to Install 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 375LR and 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, neutral connection, and initial connection to a bushing. Always ensure apparatus is de-energized during installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for 376LR voltage test)
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Silicone grease (for 376LR test point cap)
- Train and Cut Cable
Train the cable as shown in the documentation to ease future operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches of cable extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare Cable End
Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Carefully remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Ensure the cut is straight, smooth, and squared.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Finish Insulation Preparation
Remove the insulation shield as indicated by the cable cut back template. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Lubricate and Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Other lubricants may be harmful to this product or its mating product(s). Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion and wipe off all excess grease. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime.
- Install Probe
Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
- Perform Voltage Test (376LR Only)
For 376LR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Test with a suitable sensing device made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, following the manufacturer’s directions. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
