How to Install and Connect the 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
These instructions guide competent personnel through the safe installation and initial connection of 35kV class 200 ampere loadbreak elbow connectors to UD cable and mating bushing devices.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp Tool, Wire Brush, Hotstick, Cable Preparation Tools
Supplies needed:
375LR or 376LR Elbow Connector Kit, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Grounding Connector
- Observe Safety and Inspect Components
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Verify the contents of the elbow connector package are complete and undamaged. Inspect all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Read all instructions before proceeding.
- Prepare and Train the Cable
Train the cable to ease future operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable.
- Strip Cable and Install Compression Lug
Carefully remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off any excessive inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
If the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized, lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control, insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT HOLD IN THE PARTIALLY INSERTED POSITION.
