How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector to UD jacketed or non-jacketed cables and a deadbreak bushing.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wrench, Hot stick, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Capacitive voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit (housing, lug, probe, lubricant, bail), UD jacketed or non-jacketed cable, Jumper or grounding braid, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate wire connector, Vinyl tape (optional, for drain wires), Cold shrink tube (optional, for sealing kits), Conductive copper tape (optional, for tape shield kits), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if shipping covers are removed)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Review
Read all installation instructions thoroughly before starting. Inspect all parts for any damage, verify their rating, and ensure compatibility with mating components. Check the elbow housing and compression lug sizes to ensure a proper fit with your cable. Test the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized during installation. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Prepare the cable's neutral wires, grounding braid, or copper tape shield according to the specific cable type (e.g., non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield). This involves removing the outer jacket/shield to specific lengths and binding or folding wires as required. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Install Compression Lug
Remove 2-1/8” (55mm) of the cable shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately place the compression lug over the bushing, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram (6-7/8” / 175mm from the lug end). Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Clean the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing. Lubricate both surfaces with the lubricant supplied in the kit; do not substitute other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing. Lubricate these surfaces with the supplied lubricant. WARNING: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. WARNING: Do not operate by hand. Do not separate if energized.
- Secure the Elbow with the Hold-Down Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown (top) of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten the eyebolt by turning it in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need to be readjusted when removing and replacing the elbow.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional but Recommended)
Remove the test point cap with a hot stick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; it is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable capacitive sensing device made for use with separable connectors and follow its manufacturer's directions. WARNING: Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can provide a false “no voltage” indication on an energized elbow. Treat the elbow as energized until the “no voltage” test point indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
