How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and connection to a deadbreak bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wrench, Wire brush, Hot stick, Cable cut back template, Crimp tool

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (supplied), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Vinyl tape (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if applicable), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Measures

Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors. Read the entire installation instruction, check package contents, and verify elbow housing cable entrance and compression lug sizes. Ensure the unit will be bailed. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.

  2. Train Cable and Prepare Neutral Wires

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. For non-jacketed concentric neutral cable, pull extra cable 24-26 inches (610-660mm) beyond the bushing centerline and bind neutrals 7 3/4 to 8 inches (195-203mm) further back. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, pull extra cable 24-26 inches (610-660mm) beyond the bushing centerline, mark the centerline, and remove the outer jacket 9 5/8 inches (240mm) further back from the mark. For jacketed cable with drain wires, remove 9 5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket, unwrap, bind, and fold back the ground wires, then wrap with vinyl tape. For jacketed copper tape shield cable, remove 9 5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket and 7 1/8 inches (180mm) of the copper tape shield. Connect neutral wires to the tank ground with a jumper or braid, providing adequate slack.

  3. Perform Detailed Cable End Preparation

Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove 2 1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately place the compression lug over the bushing, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield 6 7/8 inches (175mm) from the cable end and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Housing

Clean the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing, then lubricate with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Connect Neutral Wires and Assemble Bail

Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing and Secure with Bail

Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, and lubricate with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND and DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED. Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt clockwise. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt to allow the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force on the elbow.
