How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

Comprehensive guide for installing 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD jacketed or non-jacketed cable, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection procedures. This product is designed for 12/20 (24)kV 250 ampere deadbreak systems.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wrench, Hot stick, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail, No. 14 AWG Copper Wire, Appropriate ground connector, Vinyl tape (if needed), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using sealing kit)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Part Verification

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. Inspect all parts (elbow housing, compression lug, probe, etc.) for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size match your cable. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace any damaged components if resistance is met. Confirm all required tools and supplies are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions for removing the outer jacket and preparing neutral or shielding wires. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a 200ECS sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable from the loose end.

  3. Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Remove 2-1/8” (55mm) of the cable shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately place the compression lug over the conductor, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove 6-7/8” (175mm) of the insulation shield, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut without nicking the insulation. Bevel the insulation end 1/8” (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe

Clean the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing, then lubricate both with the lubricant supplied in the kit. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Concentric Neutral Wires

Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing and Secure with Bail

Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, and lubricate them with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Use a fully insulated hot stick to carefully place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Place the hold-down bail in its hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it into the brackets. Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten the eyebolt by turning it in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator, preventing excessive force on the elbow.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (Post-Installation Check)

To test for voltage, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false “no voltage” indication; treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap and replace it on the test point.
