How to Install the 373FT Feed-Thru/Grounding Device

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 373FT Feed-Thru/Grounding Device, primarily for use as a junction point with loadbreak connectors.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Hotstick, Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Voltage detection device (for capacitive test points), Meter capable of direct reading system voltage (if using test rod method), ELASTIMOLD 370TR Test Rod (optional, for voltage verification)

Supplies needed:

373FT Feed-Thru Body with mounting hardware, Lubricant (supplied with 373FT, DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), No. 14 copper wire (or equivalent) for ground lead, ELASTIMOLD 35kV class loadbreak connectors (elbows)

  1. De-energize and Inspect Apparatus

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Inspect all components of the 373FT Feed-Thru, mounting hardware, and mating parts for any damage, proper rating, and compatibility. Read all instructions thoroughly before proceeding. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s) except for test point caps and indicators that can be installed and operated energized. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.

  2. Install Grounding Lead

Insert a No. 14 copper wire (or equivalent) ground lead into the grounding lug provided on the mounting hardware and firmly tighten the lug. Connect the opposite end of the ground lead to a reliable ground, ensuring enough slack is left to operate the device with a hotstick. CAUTION: Keep the ground wire clear from the operating interfaces.

  3. Prepare Feed-Thru Bushings

Remove the protective caps from both bushings of the feed-thru. Clean the bushing surfaces thoroughly and lubricate them using ONLY the lubricant supplied with the 373FT. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may harm the product or its mating components. WARNING: Protective caps must not be on the bushings of the feed-thru when the feed-thru is energized. Replace caps when the feed-thru is not in use to protect from dirt and other contaminants.

  4. Mount Feed-Thru Device onto Parking Stand

Firmly attach a hotstick to the eye of the feed-thru. Using the hotstick, slide the feed-thru onto the designated parking stand. Unlock the hotstick and back it off slightly to allow space for tightening the eyebolt. Rotate the hotstick clockwise to tighten the eyebolt until it is snug. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Release the hotstick.

  5. Connect First Loadbreak Elbow

Remove one loadbreak elbow from its apparatus loadbreak bushing, following the applicable loadbreak operating instructions (e.g., IS-375/376LR). Firmly attach a hotstick to the elbow. Insert the probe tip of the elbow into one feed-thru bushing approximately 2 inches. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the mating interfaces.

  6. Connect Second Loadbreak Elbow

Remove the second loadbreak elbow, following the applicable loadbreak operating instructions. Using a hotstick firmly attached to the elbow, insert the probe tip into the remaining feed-thru bushing approximately 2 inches. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the mating interfaces.
