How to Install Elastimold 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including initial checks, cable preparation, elbow assembly, grounding, and final connection to a de-energized bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool (refer to lug instructions), Wire strippers, Cable knife, Hotstick tool, Cleaning cloths/wipes
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2/G3 kit), Vinyl tape (if applicable for cable type)
- Perform Initial Checks and Prepare Cable for Training
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Inspect all package contents and components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant) for completeness, damage, and compatibility. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance. Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for operation. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the product manual for managing neutral/drain wires, removing the outer jacket, and preparing the cable end at the bushing centerline. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable at this stage.
- Prepare Cable Conductor and Insulation
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly. Immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow came pre-ordered with a ground wire, skip this step. For concentric neutral cables, twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a full insulated hotstick tool, remove the insulated cap from the bushing. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. Do not operate by hand.
