How to Install 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick (Live-line tool), Crimp tool, Wire brush, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test point)
Supplies needed:
261LR or 262LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit), UD Cable (appropriate type), ElastimoldR 25kV class 200ampere loadbreak bushing or accessory device, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (or equivalent) for grounding, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cold shrink tube (if using 200ECS sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit), Silicone lubricant (for test point cap)
- Prepare Cable for Termination
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Prepare the cable end by cutting it squarely at the bushing centerline. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), remove the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield to the specified dimensions (e.g., 9-5/8 inches for outer jacket, 7-1/8 inches for copper tape shield). Manage neutral or drain wires as per your cable type's instructions, ensuring extra length for grounding. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable now.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor and position it so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template (6-7/8 inches / 175mm from the lug end) and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect Grounding and Neutrals
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions to complete the grounding.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
