How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and final assembly.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), UD Cable, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate neutral wire connector, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check probe threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket (if present) and prepare the neutral wires or copper tape shield according to your specific cable type's requirements, ensuring proper lengths and binding. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove 2-1/8” (55mm) of the cable shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor, and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8” (175mm) of the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant ONLY; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Grounding Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool as per operating instructions; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Ensure positive control and push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
