How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing cables, assembling the elbow connector, grounding, and connecting the 161LR or 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector to a de-energized bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutters, Measuring tape, Cable strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool (specific to compression lug), Probe wrench, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing (161LR or 162LR), Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Vinyl tape (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Cleaning solution/wipes
- Perform Safety and Pre-Installation Checks
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify proper fit with cable and mating products, and check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack (24-36 inches or 610-914mm) for operation. Prepare neutral wires or grounding braid according to your specific cable type (e.g., bind neutrals 7-3/4 to 8 inches back for non-jacketed, or remove 9-5/8 inches of outer jacket for jacketed cables). Cut excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If using a sealing kit (e.g., 200ECS), slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug per its manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
**DANGER:** CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with this step. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
