How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire strippers, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Cable cutters

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), UD Cable, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm Copper Wire, Appropriate ground connector, Vinyl tape (as needed), Conductive copper tape (as needed), Cold shrink tube (as needed), Cleaning supplies

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and De-energize Apparatus

Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before beginning installation. Verify that all components are undamaged, rated correctly, and compatible with mating parts. Check the contents of the package for completeness and thread the probe into the compression lug to ensure free movement. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s) except for test point caps and indicators that can be installed and operated energized. Failure to follow these instructions will result in serious or fatal injury.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Initial Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Based on your cable type (e.g., non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the neutral or ground wires and remove the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield to the specified lengths. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Refer to the specific cable type instructions in the manual for precise measurements.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Insulation

Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp according to the lug's instructions. Remove the insulation shield as shown (6-7/8 inches / 175mm back), bevel the insulation end by 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum, and thoroughly clean the insulation.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DANGER: Do not operate by hand. Use a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool.
