How to Install Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector on various types of underground distribution cables. It covers cable preparation, conductor and insulation treatment, elbow assembly, grounding, and final connection to a bushing plug.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Cable cut back template, Wire strippers or utility knife
Supplies needed:
Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, Lubricant (supplied with product), Underground Distribution (UD) Cable, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Wire connectors (for neutral wires), Vinyl tape (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if using a sealing kit)
- Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components are compatible with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, replace the damaged component.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the documentation to prepare the neutral wires or grounding braid, remove the outer jacket, and cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If using a sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Using a cable cut-back template for guidance, remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp according to the lug's instructions. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield, beveling the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
DANGER: Before connecting, confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a full insulated hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. Do not operate by hand.
