How to Install 261LRJS and 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and assembly of 261LRJS (without test point) and 262LRJS (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Crimp tool (refer to lug packaging), Wire brush, Wire strippers, Hotstick (for energized operation)
Supplies needed:
261LRJS or 262LRJS Elbow Connector Kit (housing, compression lug, probe), Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), 3 Sealing strips (mastic), UD cable with jacketed concentric neutral wires, Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral to ground, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Initial Safety and Component Inspection
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating parts. Check the contents of the package to ensure completeness. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered.
- Cable Training
Train the UD cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of future operation. Pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline and mark this point. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches back from the tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wires past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.
- Apply Mastic and Tape
Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape.
- Prepare Insulation and Install Compression Lug
Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram and bevel the insulation end by 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Elbow Assembly
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Concentric Neutral Connection
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring to provide adequate slack in the wires for future elbow operation.
- Final Lubrication for Connection (Pre-Operation)
DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Do not operate the elbow by hand; use a full insulated hotstick as per operating instructions.
