How to Install the 656CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 656CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to mating apparatus. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Failure to follow instructions will result in serious injury or death.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire brush, 600ATM assembly tool, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device for capacitive test points, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool

Supplies needed:

656CETP Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Lubricant), Cable (concentric neutral, flat metallic tape shield, fabric tape shield, longitudinally corrugated shield, Unishield, lead sheath, or semi-con shield), Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer (if fabric tape shield), Tape marker, Ground wire (minimum No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable connector for ground wire, Waterproofing material for cable jacket (recommended), Mating apparatus bushing, DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR (if using tap plug interface), Insulated cap or elbow (for final assembly), Silicone grease

  1. Prepare for Installation and Position Cable

Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Ensure all required tools and supplies are at hand and maintain cleanliness. Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Measure and cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.

  2. Clean Cable Outer Surface

Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.

  3. Remove Outer Jacket and Prepare Cable Shield

If using a 20MA or 21MA grounding device or 600ECS Jacket Cable Seal, refer to their specific installation instructions for outer jacket removal, shield connection, and grounding. Otherwise, remove the cable's outer jacket to the dimension shown in the product documentation. Fold back any shield wires. If your cable has a flat metallic tape shield, remove it and secure it with vinyl plastic tape to the specified dimension. For fabric tape shield, remove it and install a tape retainer and tape marker as indicated. If using a longitudinally corrugated shield, remove it and install a tape marker. For Unishield® or lead sheath cable, refer to the 10TL cable shield adapter instructions. If your cable has a semi-con shield, remove it to the specified dimensions, taking extreme care not to cut or nick the underlying cable insulation.

  4. Install Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean the cable insulation, then lubricate it with the supplied lubricant, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  5. Prepare Conductor Length

Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be 4-3/8 to 4-11/16 inches (111mm-119mm). If not, redo the assembly.

  6. Crimp Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Before crimping, measure the 'Check Dimension' (must be less than 6-1/2 inches / 165mm). Crimp the compression lug according to the supplied crimping instructions. After crimping, wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter must be 6-1/2 to 7-1/4 inches (165mm-184mm). If not, redo the assembly.

  7. Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance with the supplied lubricant. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Verify the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  8. Prepare Mating Apparatus

WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until it is fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean.

  9. Connect Elbow to Mating Apparatus

Push the elbow onto the mating part. Using the 600ATM assembly tool, engage the hex broach in the contact assembly. Insert the contact assembly into the elbow interface to engage the stud. Tighten the contact assembly to 50-60 foot-pounds torque using the 600ATM assembly tool. DO NOT EXCEED 60 FOOT POUNDS TORQUE.

  10. Ground Cable Shield

Insert one end of a ground wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, avoiding damage to the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions supplied with any grounding device or use an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  11. Install Tap Plug Interface (Optional)

Clean and lubricate the entire loadbreak interface and either a DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR of the appropriate voltage class with the supplied lubricant. Install the DR(G), ESA, GLR, or LR to the tap plug interface following their respective product instructions.

  12. Verify Seating Indication

Confirm complete assembly of an insulated cap or elbow by ensuring no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side.

  13. Perform Voltage Test (Optional)

The ELASTIMOLD® deadbreak elbow connector is equipped with an integral capacitance test point. To perform a voltage test, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: This is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Contamination or incorrect equipment can cause false readings. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
