How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial connection of the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector to various underground distribution cables and mating bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp Tool (for compression lug), Wire Brush, Wire Strippers/Cable Knife, Measuring Tape/Ruler, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
262LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Copper Wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Neutral Wire Connector, Cleaning Solution/Wipes, HV Insulated Cap(s) or Connector(s)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Procedures
DANGER: DE-ENERGIZE ALL APPARATUS. Ensure the work area is clear. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check package contents for completeness. Verify probe threads freely into the compression lug for at least four turns. Read all instructions thoroughly and gather all required tools and supplies. Replace any protective shipping covers with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before proceeding.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Prepare neutral wires or grounding braid as required for your cable type, ensuring extra length for connection to tank ground. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield according to your cable type and specified dimensions (e.g., 9-5/8" jacket, 7-1/8" copper tape shield). Remove 2-1/8" (55mm) of the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Bevel the insulation end 1/8" (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or inhibitor traces.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread any inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug using the recommended crimp tool, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
