How to Install Elastimold 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, covering initial checks, cable preparation, lug crimping, elbow assembly, grounding, and final connection to a de-energized bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp Tool, Wire Brush, Wire Strippers, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper Ground Wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Grounding Connector, Cold Shrink Sealing Kit (if applicable)
- Perform Initial Safety and Component Checks
Before starting, ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components, including the compression lug and probe, fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered.
- Prepare Cable and Outer Jacket
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for operation. Refer to the product manual for specific cable type instructions (e.g., non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, drain wire, copper tape shield) to prepare neutral/grounding wires and remove the outer jacket to the specified length. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Lug
Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp according to the lug's instructions, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for successive crimps. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the manual (6-7/8” (175mm) back from the cable end) and bevel the insulation end 1/8” (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Grounding Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to De-energized Bushing
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Ensure a fast, firm, straight motion to fully engage the elbow and bushing.
