How to Install Elastimold 261LRJS/262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 261LRJS and 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Mastic sealing strips (3 supplied), Vinyl tape, Compression lug (supplied), Probe (supplied), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, Appropriate ground connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)

  1. Initial Safety and Component Check

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation to prevent serious injury. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify proper fit of components with the cable and mating products. If a test point cap is not installed, lubricate and install it.

  2. Train and Cut Cable

Train the cable to allow sufficient slack for operation. Pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline and place a tape mark at the centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches back from this tape mark. Unwrap neutral wires back past the bushing centerline and cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.

  3. Prepare Cable Jacket and Neutral Wires

Wrap one mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and press them firmly into it. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter in the area of the first mastic location, then cover all mastic with vinyl tape.

  4. Prepare Cable Insulation and Install Lug

Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the provided crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the remaining insulation shield and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  5. Assemble Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Other lubricants may be harmful to this product or its mating product(s). Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion and wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in wires for elbow operation.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Operate per the following instructions, using a hotstick. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
