How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding procedures for various cable types.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Measuring tape, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate neutral wire connector, Cleaning supplies, Cable sealing kit (if applicable)
- Perform Initial Checks and Safety Procedures
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for smooth operation. Have all required tools ready and maintain a clean work area. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high-voltage safety practices.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Prepare the concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire as required by your specific cable type, ensuring extra length for connection to the tank ground. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the tube onto the cable loose end first before proceeding.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly. Immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor, and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions for completion.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
