How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and setup of 600-ampere and 900-ampere K655/K675LR deadbreak elbow connectors on 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Lubricant, Compression Lug, Cable Adapter, Insulating Plug, Threaded Stud, No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Tape marker
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Parts
Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before installation or removal. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing.
- Prepare Cable for Installation
Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack to remove elbows. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24” (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires.
- Perform Cable Preparation (Specific to Cable Type)
Follow the specific instructions for your cable type (e.g., 20MA/21MA grounding device, UNISHIELD, Jacketed/Non-Jacketed). Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable dimensions as shown in the diagrams, ensuring correct lengths for insulation, semi-con shield, and tape marker.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare and Measure Conductor
Remove protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4-1/4” – 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Install and Crimp Compression Lug
For copper, fully insert conductor into lug. For aluminum, wire brush and immediately insert. Measure 'Check Dimension' before crimping (must be < 6-3/8”). Crimp lug per instructions, starting at indicated end. Wipe excess inhibitor. Verify post-crimp distance from lug end to adapter is 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm). Redo if dimensions are incorrect.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare and Connect Mating Products
Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the supplied threaded stud into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and mating part with supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.
- Push Elbow onto Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Opposite Mating Part (if applicable)
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert the mating part into the elbow. Engage the threads and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its supplied instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug and Voltage Detection Cap (if used)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down hard until it snaps into place.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert a wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper equivalent) through the grounding eye, twist to form a loop, and connect to ground using a suitable connector. Ground the cable shield per grounding device instructions or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket to prevent moisture entry. For 600-amp L-Kits, ensure all components are torqued to specifications.
- Perform Voltage Test (Capacitive Test Point)
The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling at an angle. Test with a suitable sensing device to determine if energized. Treat as energized until 'no voltage' is confirmed by other means to prevent injury. Clean, lubricate, and replace the cap after testing.
