How to Install 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables, including cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Appropriate connector (for neutral wires)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Procedures
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized, except for test point caps and indicators. Do not touch or move energized products. Verify that only competent personnel trained in high-voltage safety practices are performing the installation. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Test the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, replace the damaged component. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to provide sufficient slack for future operation. Based on your specific cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the detailed instructions in the manual for preparing neutral/drain wires and removing the outer jacket or copper tape shield. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a cold shrink tube from a sealing kit, slide it onto the cable loose end first at this stage.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Thoroughly wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug using the recommended crimp tool, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8” (175mm) from the lug end, then bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Clean the insulation thoroughly to remove all dirt or inhibitor traces.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring no cross-threading. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions to complete this step.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with the connection. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
