How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation, cable preparation, and assembly of 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable. It covers initial checks, cable preparation, elbow assembly, and connection to a bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Hotstick (live-line tool), Wire brush, Crimp tool (refer to lug packaging), Wire strippers, Voltage sensing device (for capacitive test points, 162LRJS only)
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Mastic sealing strips, Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector, Insulated cap (for bushing, if not already present)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect package contents for completeness and damage. Check all components for proper fit with cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. If installing a 162LRJS connector, lubricate the test point cap and test point, then install the cap.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for operation. Provide an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid (24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline). Unwrap the neutral wires past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Wrap one mastic strip around the jacket, bend neutral wires back over it, and press them into the mastic. Wrap a second (and third if needed) mastic strip, then cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp according to the lug's instructions. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template, beveling the insulation end 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting tightly without damaging the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
WARNING: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Do not operate by hand. Remove the insulated cap from the bushing by attaching a hotstick tool to the cap's pulling eye. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector's pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Withdraw the elbow from the apparatus parking stand with a fast, straight, firm motion, being careful not to place it near a ground plane. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
- Perform Voltage Test (162LRJS Only)
If using a 162LRJS connector, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the specific sensing device used. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false reading. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
