Overview

The ABB 376LR-J-5230 is a 35kV, 200 Amp loadbreak elbow connector engineered for reliable medium-voltage power distribution systems. This fully shielded, fully submersible connector features a 100% peroxide-cured EPDM rubber housing with conductive materials for superior environmental resistance. The integral non-corrosive capacitive voltage test point enables safe energized testing without system interruption. Designed for compatibility with 35kV Class, 200 Amp distribution apparatus, it supports loadmaking and loadbreak operations using standard hot stick tools for visible disconnects. The connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.980 inches to 1.180 inches (24.89-29.97 mm), covering compressed stranded AWG #1 or solid 1/0 conductors (42.41 mm²). Its long bi-metal compression lug provides universal compatibility for both copper and aluminum conductors, ensuring secure, corrosion-resistant connections. The 376LR-J-5230 meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 requirements with a 150kV BIL impulse withstand rating, 50kV AC one-minute withstand, and 200 Amp continuous/loadbreak current capacity. Ideal for underground distribution systems, substations, and industrial power applications where safe, efficient circuit connection and disconnection are critical. How to Install 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and assembly of 375LR and 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation and connection procedures.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire or equivalent, Appropriate grounding connector, Silicone grease

  1. Prepare for Installation and Safety Check

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before starting installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean work area throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Train the cable as shown to ease future operation, ensuring at least 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the compression lug's contact threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp according to the crimp chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template, then bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  4. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  5. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control of the elbow connector, insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT HOLD IN THIS PARTIALLY INSERTED POSITION.
