How to Install 161LRJS/162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the installation and assembly of 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal, including cable preparation and connection procedures for UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Voltage sensing device (for 162LRJS test point)
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Mastic strips, Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks
Inspect the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Check the probe threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. Read the entire installation instructions before starting and have all required tools at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Test Point (162LRJS Only)
If using the 162LRJS model and the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and the test point, then install the cap securely.
- Train Cable and Cut to Length
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Provide an extra length of concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire (24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline) to facilitate connection to the tank ground. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Neutral Wires
Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the neutral wires imbedded into the first mastic strip. Use a third strip of mastic if needed to build up the outer diameter in the area of the first mastic location. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor
Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Bevel Insulation and Clean
Remove the insulation shield as indicated by the cable cut back template. Bevel the insulation end by 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble Elbow Housing onto Cable
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant.
- Align Elbow and Thread Probe
Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting tightly without damaging the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Lubricate for Connection (Safety Warning)
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Do not operate by hand; use a fully insulated 'hotstick' type tool.
- Perform Voltage Test (162LRJS Only)
If using the 162LRJS, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the meter used and test with a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points. Contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication; treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
