How to Install the Elastimold 167LRT Loadbreak Bushing Tap
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the Elastimold 167LRT Loadbreak Bushing Tap, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Wrenches, Installation tool, Wire brush, Crimp tool
Supplies needed:
Bushing Tap Housing, Compression Lug, Socket Contact, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Well Contact, UD cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, Appropriate ground connector, Insulated cap or mating elbow connector
- De-energize and Prepare the Cable
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Train the UD cable to ease operation, then cut excess cable squarely at the bushing's center line. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Bushing Well Contact and Initial Bushing Tap Components
Thread the well contact onto the bushing well stud by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten with a wrench until the wrench bends, signifying proper torque. Remove the protective cap from the bushing tap and retrieve the socket contact stored inside the bushing tap housing. Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the bushing housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep insulation clean and do not introduce excess grease or grease into the gap between the lug and insulation.
- Mount the Bushing Tap and Connect Neutral
Slide the bushing tap onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the bushing with the compression lug hole and assemble the socket contact into the bushing tap, ensuring the socket contact stud passes through the lug hole. Inspect the apparatus bushing well to ensure it is dry and free from contaminants. Lubricate the bushing well interface area of the bushing tap with the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Place the lubricated bushing tap portion into the apparatus bushing well. Insert the installation tool into the bore of the bushing tap until fully seated. Insert a wrench through the wrench hole of the tool and turn clockwise until the wrench bends, indicating proper assembly torque. Remove the wrench and installation tool. Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the bushing tap and twist it tight without damaging the eye. Twist the neutral wires and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector.
- Final Lubrication and Mating Product Connection
Thoroughly wipe the bushing tap interface clean of any contaminants and apply a light, uniform coat of supplied lubricant, working it thoroughly into the surface. CAUTION: Excess lubricant may prevent a loadbreak elbow from being fully seated in the 'locked on' position. Install the mating products (e.g., loadbreak elbow, insulated cap, or grounding elbow connector) to the bushing tap following their specific instructions. If a mating product is not immediately installed, replace the shipping cap. Do not energize or submerge the apparatus with only the shipping cap, as it is not insulated or watertight.
