How to Install Elastimold 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides detailed instructions for installing Elastimold 35kV class 200 ampere 375LR (without test point) and 376LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, covering cable preparation, elbow assembly, grounding, and initial connection.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Cable cut back template, Wire strippers, Utility knife, Suitable sensing device (for 376LR only)

Supplies needed:

Elastimold 375LR or 376LR Elbow Connector Kit (housing, compression lug, probe, lubricant), UD cable with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector, Silicone grease (for 376LR test point cap)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect the contents of the elbow connector package to confirm all parts (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant) are complete and undamaged. Verify proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; if resistance is encountered before full assembly, replace the damaged component. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Failure to follow these instructions will result in serious or fatal injury.

  2. Train and Prepare the Cable

Train the UD cable to ease future operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the cable cut back template, then bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue. Do not cut or nick insulation during preparation.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Connect Concentric Neutral to Ground

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug (De-energized)

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. This step must ONLY be performed if both the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion. Apply sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. WARNING: Lubricate only if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Do not operate by hand; use a full insulated hotstick.

  6. Perform Voltage Test (376LR Only)

If installing a 376LR elbow with a test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device, specifically designed for separable connectors with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the meter used. After the voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury.
