How to Install 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation and initial connection of 161LRJS and 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with Jacket Seal on UD cable. It covers cable preparation, elbow assembly, neutral connection, and final connection to a bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick tool, Cable preparation template

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Mastic strips, Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate ground connector, Insulated cap (for bushing, to be removed)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks

Inspect package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. If installing a 162LRJS, lubricate and install the test point cap if it is not already in place. DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before proceeding with installation.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Mark the centerline of the bushing with tape and pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond this mark. Remove the outer jacket 7 3/4 to 8 inches back from the centerline. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing's centerline.

  3. Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor

Wrap one mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them firmly into the mastic. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if necessary to build up the outer diameter in this area. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as indicated in the diagram and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing

DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Remove the insulated cap from the bushing by attaching a hotstick tool to its pulling eye and following its accessory instructions. Securely fasten the hotstick tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Withdraw the elbow from the apparatus parking stand with a fast, straight, firm motion, being careful not to place it near a ground plane. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
