How to Install the 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and preparation of the 162LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector, designed for terminating UD cable with jacketed concentric neutral wires.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick tool, Voltage sensing device

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (supplied with connector), Mastic sealing strips (supplied with connector), Vinyl tape, Copper grounding wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Grounding connector, Silicone lubricant (for test point cap)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Inspect package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.

  2. Train and Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Provide an extra length of concentric neutral wires (24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline) or grounding braid wire. Remove the outer jacket 7 3/4 to 8 inches back from the bushing centerline. Unwrap the neutral wire back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.

  3. Prepare the Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Wrap one mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Align the compression lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant only; do not substitute. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly without damaging the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in wires for elbow operation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing (De-energized)

DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Remove the insulated cap from the bushing by attaching a hotstick tool to the pulling eye and following its instructions. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (162LRJS Only)

WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; it is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, following the manufacturer's directions, to determine if the cable is energized. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
