How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Electrical tape
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), UD Cable, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Connector for neutral wires, Cold shrink tube (if using a sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using a specific sealing kit)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Ensure Safety
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Check package contents for completeness and ensure the probe threads freely into the compression lug for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.
- Prepare Cable End According to Type
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Prepare the cable end by cutting it squarely at the bushing centerline. Depending on the cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions for removing the outer jacket, unwrapping neutral or drain wires, and applying any necessary sealing kits or conductive tape. Ensure extra length of neutral wires or grounding braid is available for connection to tank ground.
- Strip Cable and Crimp Compression Lug
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown, beveling the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Lubricate and Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Grounding and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to De-energized Bushing
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool; do not operate by hand. Ensure positive control of the elbow connector and insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. Do not hold in the partially inserted position.
