How to Install 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and wiring of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate neutral connector, Silicone lubricant
- Ensure Safety and Verify Components
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Inspect all package contents and components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant) for completeness, damage, proper fit with cable, and compatibility with mating products. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered.
- Prepare Cable and Install Compression Lug
Train the cable for slack. Following instructions for your specific cable type, prepare neutral/ground wires and remove the outer jacket/shield. Remove insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug per manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line and rotating 180 degrees for successive crimps. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove insulation shield as shown, bevel insulation end 1/8” (5mm) max. Thoroughly clean insulation.
- Assemble Elbow and Connect Grounding
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten with the probe wrench until the wrench bends. Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. Twist all neutral wires and connect to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing and Perform Voltage Test
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the elbow receptacle and mating bushing with supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the connector pulling eye. Remove any insulated cap from the bushing. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. For 162LR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick (peel off at an angle). WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; use a suitable sensing device, not conventional voltage equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until 'no voltage' is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean, lubricate with silicone, and replace the test point cap.
