Overview

ABB Installation Products 162LR-C5230 is a 15kV, 200 Amp loadbreak elbow connector engineered for #1 AWG stranded copper conductors with insulation diameters between 0.805" and 1.060". This bi-metal compression lug delivers a secure, insulated interface for medium-voltage cable systems, enabling safe loadbreak operations in underground distribution networks. The integrated test point allows voltage verification without circuit interruption, reducing downtime during maintenance or fault isolation. Typical applications include pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, and underground residential or commercial distribution systems where operator safety and system reliability are critical. The elbow’s molded EPDM housing provides environmental resistance to moisture, ozone, and UV exposure, extending service life in outdoor or buried installations. Compatible with industry-standard 15kV class equipment, this connector supports quick, tool-free connections and disconnections, minimizing installation time and labor costs. The bi-metal compression lug accommodates #1 AWG stranded copper conductors, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of medium-voltage cable systems. The 200 Amp rating makes it suitable for demanding distribution applications, while the loadbreak design allows for safe energized connections and disconnections.

How to Install 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding procedures.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire cutters, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire, Vinyl tape, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using sealing kit), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)

  1. Prepare the Cable

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Train the cable to provide sufficient slack for ease of operation. Depending on the cable type (non-jacketed/jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the neutral or drain wires and remove the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield according to the specific cable preparation guidelines provided in the documentation. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline.

  2. Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  4. Ground the Elbow and Connect Neutrals

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the installation.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with this step. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye and operate the elbow to connect it to the bushing plug. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
