How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the elbow connector, grounding, and connecting the 161LR or 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector to a bushing. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers/knife, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Grounding Wire, Neutral Wire Connector, UD Cable
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Ensure Safety
Before starting, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by threading it into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the manual for preparing neutral/ground wires and removing the outer jacket. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable at this stage.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor, and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
