How to Install the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe installation and assembly of the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, lug installation, and final connection to a 15kV class bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Knife, Probe wrench, Hotstick tool, Cleaning cloth
Supplies needed:
162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Cable sealing kit (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if using specific sealing kits), Vinyl tape (if using specific cable types)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Verification
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness.
- Prepare Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the product manual (Step 1) to prepare the cable end, including unwrapping neutral/ground wires, cutting the cable squarely, and applying any necessary sealing kits or tape. Ensure an extra length of neutral wires or grounding braid is available for connection to tank ground.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor, and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or inhibitor traces.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Establish Grounding Connections
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions to complete the grounding process.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
DANGER: Confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
