How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides detailed instructions for the installation and assembly of 161LR (without test point) and 162LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for neutrals), Vinyl tape, Cold shrink tube (optional), Conductive copper tape (optional)

  1. Perform Safety Checks and Initial Inspection

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components are compatible with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness.

  2. Train Cable and Prepare Outer Jacket/Neutral Wires

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Depending on cable type, pull extra cable (24-36 inches) for concentric neutral wires or grounding braid, or cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket (9-5/8 inches for jacketed types) and prepare neutral or drain wires as per cable type (unwrap, bind, or wrap with conductive tape). If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable at this stage.

  3. Strip Cable and Install Compression Lug

Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor and align the contact threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield (6-7/8 inches / 175mm from lug end), beveling insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation.

  4. Assemble Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and inside the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Grounding Wire and Concentric Neutrals

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  6. Connect Elbow to De-energized Bushing

CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool; do not operate by hand. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock.
