How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ2W Cable Joint
This guide provides detailed instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and submersible installation of the 15/25/35PCJ2W series straight joint for aluminum and/or copper conductor, wire shielded cables. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Circular cutting tool, Glass scraper, Wirebrush, Hex wrench, Crimping tool
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Cable Adapters, Lubricant, Retaining Collars, Hose Clamp, Electrical tape, #14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent), Appropriate connector (user supplied), Heat/cold shrink jacket (user supplied)
- Perform Safety Checks and Initial Preparation
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before installation or removal. Inspect all components for damage, rating, and compatibility. Examine mating cable ends for moisture and contaminants. Remove graphite coatings 12 inches (30.5cm) beyond the cable jacket cut using a circular cutting tool or glass scraper; avoid sanding. If conductors contain strand filled or water-blocking material, contact the cable manufacturer for welding/crimping procedures.
- Prepare Cable Jackets and Position Housing
Using a stripping guide, carefully remove the cable jacket of both cables for a distance of 11-1/4 inches (285.7mm). Fold back the shield wires and tape the end of the wires on Cable 1, allowing enough extra length to rejoin later. Clean the surface of the insulation shield, shield wires, and jacket for a distance of 30 inches (760mm). Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1 to a distance of 30 inches (760mm).
- Prepare Cable Insulation
Using the stripping guide, carefully remove the insulation shield and cable insulation. CAUTION: DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION, as this could lead to assembly failure. Wrap two turns of tape 1 inch (25mm) from the edge of the insulation shield on both cables to serve as a marker. Clean the cable insulation thoroughly, then lubricate it to create a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Install Cable Adapters and Retaining Collars
Lubricate the inside of both ends of one cable adapter. Install this cable adapter onto Cable 1 until it meets the tape marker. Repeat this process for the other cable adapter on Cable 2. Select the retaining collars and partially thread the proper size setscrews. Position each retaining collar over the insulation, flush against its respective cable adapter. Using the supplied hex wrench, tighten each set screw one or two turns at a time to keep the collar centered, then continue tightening until the screws are below the collar surface.
- Splice Conductors
Thoroughly clean the ends of the cable adapters and the cable where shown. Install a hose clamp around the adapter on the opposite side of the splice from where the housing is stored to hold the adapter in place. Tape over the hose clamp to form a smooth surface. Wirebrush the exposed conductors of both cables and immediately insert them into the splice. Verify the 'Check' dimension does not exceed 8-1/2 inches (215mm); redo assembly if it does. Crimp the splice according to its recommendations. Wipe off all excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable adapters; redo assembly if it exceeds 8-3/4 inches (222mm). Clean and lubricate the outside surface of the cable adapters.
- Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding
Slide the joint housing into its final position, centering it over the cable adapters. Remove all tape, ensuring that no cable or adapter insulation is exposed after positioning the joint. Reshape the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and over the joint housing using heat/cold shrink materials (not included).
