How to Install the 10TL Adapter for Flat Metallic Tape Shielded Cable
This guide details the installation of the 10TL adapter for cables with flat metallic tape insulation shields, used in conjunction with ELASTIMOLD distribution products. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized and follow all safety practices for high voltage electrical equipment. Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Cable stripping tool, Knife, Rag, Soldering iron
Supplies needed:
10TL Adapter housing, Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), 3/4 inch (19mm) wide PVC insulating electrical tape, Vinyl plastic electrical tape, Approved safety solvent, #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire, Grounding lead, Solder, Elastimold distribution product
- Prepare the Cable by Removing Outer Jacket
Refer to the ELASTIMOLD product instructions for the specified dimension for semiconductive shield removal. Remove the cable's outer jacket a distance of 2 inches (51mm) more than this specified dimension.
- Remove Metallic Tape
Carefully remove the metallic tape from the cable, ensuring it is removed to a point 3/4 inch (19mm) from the edge of the remaining outer jacket.
- Remove Semiconducting Tape
Remove the semiconducting tape to a point 1 inch (25mm) from the edge of the outer jacket, exposing the cable insulation.
- Apply Retainer and Marker Tapes
Wrap 1-1/2 to 2 turns of 3/4 inch (19mm) wide PVC insulating electrical tape over the semiconducting and metallic tapes, 1/2 inch (13mm) from the edge of the outer jacket, to serve as a retainer. Then, wrap 2 turns of vinyl plastic electrical tape over the outer jacket, 1 inch (25mm) from its edge, to create a tape marker.
- Clean and Lubricate Cable and Adapter
Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semiconducting residue using a rag soaked with an approved safety solvent. Always wipe from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. Lubricate the prepared cable end and the inside of the 10TL adapter with the provided lubricant.
- Slide Adapter onto Cable
Slide the 10TL adapter onto the cable using a forward side-to-side twisting motion. Continue until the adapter is flush with the tape marker you applied in Step 4. The step on the adapter will serve as a marker for subsequent ELASTIMOLD product assembly.
- Install ELASTIMOLD Product
Install the ELASTIMOLD distribution product by following the specific installation instructions supplied with that product. After installation, a maximum gap of 1/8 inch (3mm) between the ELASTIMOLD product and the step on the 10TL adapter is permissible.
- Remove Tape Marker
Once the ELASTIMOLD product has been successfully assembled onto the cable, remove the vinyl plastic electrical tape marker from the cable.
- Ground Metallic Shielding Tape
Approximately 2 inches (51mm) back from the end of the adapter, remove the outer jacket a distance of 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Using #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire, make several wraps to fasten a grounding lead to the metallic shielding tape. Solder the grounding lead to the metallic tape, avoiding excessive heat to prevent cable damage. After soldering, wrap the soldered area with electrical insulating tape, overlapping each cable jacket by approximately 1-1/2 inches (38mm). WARNING: Ungrounded shields are dangerous.
