How to Install the 10TL Adapter for Flat Metallic Tape Shielded Cables
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 10TL adapter on cables with semiconducting tape insulation shields and flat metallic tape drains, ensuring proper preparation and connection with Elastimold distribution products. Always de-energize apparatus before installation.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Knife, Measuring tape or ruler, Rag, Soldering iron
Supplies needed:
10TL Adapter housing, Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Approved safety solvent, 3/4" (19mm) wide PVC insulating electrical tape, Vinyl plastic electrical tape, #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire, Grounding lead, Solder, Electrical insulating tape, ELASTIMOLD distribution product (mating part)
- Prepare the Cable Outer Jacket
Refer to the Elastimold product's instructions for the semiconductive shield removal dimension (typically in Step 2). Remove the cable's outer jacket a distance of 2 inches (51mm) more than this specified dimension. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before proceeding.
- Remove Metallic Tape
Remove the metallic tape from the cable, leaving 3/4 inch (19mm) of metallic tape from the edge of the outer jacket.
- Remove Semiconducting Tape
Remove the semiconducting tape from the cable, leaving 1 inch (25mm) of semiconducting tape from the edge of the outer jacket.
- Apply Retainer and Marker Tapes
Wrap 1-1/2 to 2 turns of 3/4 inch (19mm) wide PVC insulating electrical tape over the semiconducting and metallic tapes, 1/2 inch (13mm) from the edge of the outer jacket, to serve as a retainer. Then, wrap 2 turns of vinyl plastic electrical tape over the outer jacket, 1 inch (25mm) from its edge, to create a tape marker.
- Clean and Lubricate Cable and Adapter
Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all semiconducting residue. Use a rag soaked with an approved safety solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket. Lubricate the prepared cable and the inside of the 10TL adapter using the supplied lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE).
- Slide Adapter onto Cable
Slide the adapter onto the cable using a forward side-to-side twisting motion. Continue until the adapter is flush with the tape marker. The step on the adapter will serve as a marker for assembling the ELASTIMOLD product.
- Install the ELASTIMOLD Product
Install the ELASTIMOLD product by following the specific installation instructions provided with that product. After installation, a maximum gap of 1/8 inch (3mm) between the ELASTIMOLD product and the step on the adapter is permissible.
- Remove Tape Marker
After the ELASTIMOLD product has been assembled, remove the tape marker from the cable.
- Ground Metallic Shielding Tape
Approximately 2 inches (51mm) back from the end of the adapter, remove 1-1/2 inches (38mm) of the outer jacket. Use #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire to fasten a grounding lead to the metallic shielding tape by making several wraps. Solder the ground lead to the metallic tape, avoiding excessive heat to prevent cable damage. After soldering, wrap the soldered area with electrical insulating tape, overlapping each cable jacket by approximately 1-1/2 inches (38mm). WARNING: UNGROUNDED SHIELDS ARE DANGEROUS.
