How to Install the 10TL Adapter for Flat Metallic Tape Shielded Cable
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 10TL adapter on flat metallic tape shielded cables, ensuring proper preparation and connection with Elastimold distribution products. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Knife, Rag, Wire strippers, Soldering iron, Multimeter
Supplies needed:
10TL Adapter housing, Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), PVC insulating electrical tape (3/4 inch wide), Vinyl plastic electrical tape, Approved safety solvent, #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire, Grounding lead, Solder, Electrical insulating tape, Elastimold distribution product
- De-energize and Prepare for Installation
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Verify the contents of the package are complete and undamaged, and check all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cable Outer Jacket
Remove the cable's outer jacket a distance of 2 inches (51mm) more than the semiconductive shield removal dimension specified in the Elastimold product instructions.
- Remove Metallic Tape
Remove the metallic tape to a point 3/4 inch (19mm) from the edge of the outer jacket.
- Remove Semiconducting Tape
Remove the semiconducting tape to a point 1 inch (25mm) from the edge of the outer jacket.
- Apply Retainer and Marker Tapes
Wrap 1-1/2 to 2 turns of 3/4 inch (19mm) wide PVC insulating electrical tape over the semiconducting and metallic tapes, 1/2 inch (13mm) from the outer jacket edge, to serve as a tape retainer. Then, wrap 2 turns of vinyl plastic electrical tape over the outer jacket, 1 inch (25mm) from its edge, to serve as a tape marker.
- Clean and Lubricate Cable and Adapter
Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semiconducting residue using an approved safety solvent. Always wipe from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. Lubricate the prepared cable and the inside of the 10TL adapter.
- Install 10TL Adapter
Slide the 10TL adapter onto the cable using a forward, side-to-side twisting motion until it is flush with the tape marker. The step on the adapter will serve as a marker for subsequent Elastimold product assembly.
- Install Elastimold Product
Install the associated Elastimold product by following its specific installation instructions. After installation, a maximum gap of 1/8 inch (3mm) between the Elastimold product and the adapter's step is permissible.
- Remove Tape Marker
Remove the tape marker from the cable after the Elastimold product has been assembled.
- Ground the Metallic Shield
Approximately 2 inches (51mm) back from the end of the adapter, remove the outer jacket a distance of 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Using #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire and a grounding lead, fasten the grounding lead to the metallic shielding tape by making several wraps with the #14 AWG wire. Solder the ground lead securely to the metallic tape, taking care to avoid excessive heat that could damage the cable. After soldering, wrap the soldered area with electrical insulating tape, overlapping each cable jacket by approximately 1-1/2 inches (38mm).
