How to Install the 10TL Adapter for Flat Metallic Tape Shielded Cable
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 10TL adapter with Elastimold distribution products on cables featuring flat metallic tape insulation shields. Ensure all safety precautions are followed during installation.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Knife, Rag, Approved safety solvent, Soldering iron, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
10TL Adapter housing, Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), 3/4" PVC insulating electrical tape, Vinyl plastic electrical tape, #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire, Grounding lead, Electrical insulating tape, Elastimold distribution product
- Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before installation or removal. Ensure all components are undamaged, rated correctly, and compatible with mating parts. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Have all required tools and maintain cleanliness. Refer to the Elastimold product instructions as a required supplement.
- Prepare the Cable Jacket and Tapes
Remove the outer jacket a distance of 2 inches (51mm) more than the semiconductive shield removal dimension specified by the Elastimold product instructions. Next, remove the metallic tape to a point 3/4 inch (19mm) from the outer jacket edge. Finally, remove the semiconducting tape to a point 1 inch (25mm) from the outer jacket edge.
- Apply Tape Retainer and Marker
Wrap 1-1/2 to 2 turns of 3/4 inch (19mm) wide PVC insulating electrical tape over the semiconducting and metallic tapes, 1/2 inch (13mm) from the outer jacket edge, to serve as a tape retainer. Then, wrap 2 turns of vinyl plastic electrical tape over the outer jacket, 1 inch (25mm) from its edge, to create a tape marker.
- Clean and Lubricate the Cable
Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semiconducting residue. Use a rag soaked with an approved safety solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket. Lubricate the prepared cable and the inside of the 10TL adapter.
- Install the 10TL Adapter
Slide the 10TL adapter onto the cable using a forward side-to-side twisting motion. Continue until the adapter is flush with the tape marker. The step on the adapter will serve as a marker for assembling the ELASTIMOLD product.
- Install the ELASTIMOLD Product
Install the ELASTIMOLD distribution product by following the specific installation instructions provided with that product. After installation, a maximum gap of 1/8 inch (3mm) between the ELASTIMOLD product and the adapter's step is permissible. Once the ELASTIMOLD product is assembled, remove the tape marker from the cable.
- Ground the Metallic Shielding Tape
Approximately 2 inches (51mm) back from the end of the adapter, remove the outer jacket a distance of 1-1/2 inches (38mm). Fasten a #14 AWG (2.08mm²) wire and a grounding lead to the metallic shielding tape by making several wraps. Solder the ground lead to the metallic tape, being careful to avoid excessive heat that could damage the cable. After soldering, wrap the soldered area with electrical insulating tape, overlapping each cable jacket by approximately 1-1/2 inches (38mm).
